The music of Sciarrino’s opera from 1998 is a magnificent variation on Gesualdo’s insanity, love and wild jealousy. Gesualdo murdered his wife, Maria d’Avalos and her lover, Fabrizio Carafa, in bed, in flagrante, and became mentally ill near the end of his life.
